Tattoo pricing is one of the most common questions we receive, and one of the hardest to answer without context.
Every tattoo is different. The size, the level of detail, the placement, and the artist all play a role in how a piece comes together. Because of this, there is no single price that applies to every tattoo.
At Ink Noir Tattoo Studio in Winnipeg, we take a structured approach to pricing so each project is matched with the right artist and handled properly from the start.
This guide breaks down how tattoo pricing works, what affects the cost, and what you can expect at different price points.
Shop Minimum
Our shop minimum starts at $125.
This covers setup, sterile equipment, and the time required for even small tattoos. Final minimums may vary slightly depending on the artist and the piece, but this is the general starting point.
How Tattoo Pricing Works
Tattoo pricing is based on time and complexity, and at Ink Noir, all work is charged by the hour.
Every tattoo comes together differently. The time it takes is influenced by the level of detail, the placement on the body, and how the design develops during the session. Because of this, a fixed price does not always reflect what the work actually requires.
Charging hourly allows the artist to focus on doing the tattoo properly. There is no need to rush through details or simplify the design to meet a set number. The work can be approached with the level of care, precision, and attention it deserves.
The time required can vary based on:
Size and placement
Level of detail
Style of tattoo
How the design fits and flows on the body
The experience of the artist
This approach ensures the final result is not limited by a preset price, but guided by what the tattoo needs to be done well.
Artist Rates
At Ink Noir, artist rates vary based on experience and the type of work they take on.
Junior artists range from $100 to $125 per hour.
Experienced artists range from $130 to $150 per hour.
Senior artists range from $175 to $200 per hour.
All artists in the studio are trained and held to a consistent standard. The difference in pricing reflects experience, efficiency, and the ability to execute more complex work with confidence.
What to Expect at Different Price Points
Understanding pricing also means understanding what you are paying for.
At junior price ranges, you can expect smaller or simpler designs and more flexible availability. These artists are building experience within a structured environment and are a strong option for straightforward work.
With experienced artists, you will see a balance of detail and design complexity. Linework and shading are more consistent, and this is where most custom tattoos fall.
With our senior artists, you are paying for advanced detail, refined execution, and strong composition. These artists have years of experience and a deeper understanding of how tattoos will sit on the body and age over time.
It is completely fine to choose a more budget friendly option. The most important part is making sure the design fits the artist and the budget works with the scope of the piece.
Working with Junior Artists
At Ink Noir, junior artists are trained within the studio and work under the oversight of the shop owner. Their work is guided and supported to ensure it meets the standard of the studio.
Choosing a junior artist can be a strong option if you are working within a set budget or open to a simpler approach.
As they continue to develop, there may be some variation in timing, detail, or overall execution compared to more experienced artists. This is reflected in their pricing and is part of their growth within the studio.
Being flexible with design, size, and detail will help ensure the best possible result within that range.
How Your Budget Is Used
Your budget helps us match your request with the right artist.
If you are working within a specific range, we guide your project toward an artist and design that fits that range properly. This may involve adjusting size, detail, or placement to make sure the final result is something that can be executed well.
All of our artists are capable and trained. The difference comes down to experience and the type of work they are best suited for.
Touch Ups and Healing
Healing is part of the tattoo process, and it doesn’t look the same for everyone.
How a tattoo settles can be affected by placement, skin type, day to day activity, and aftercare. Because of that, it’s normal for some areas to heal lighter or need a small adjustment once the skin has fully settled.
Touch ups are there to refine how the tattoo healed, not to make changes to the original design.
Once your tattoo is fully settled, we’re happy to take a look and let you know if anything needs to be touched up. This is always assessed by the artist who completed the work.
If a touch up is needed, it should be brought forward within three months of your appointment. We do ask that aftercare has been followed, as that plays a big role in how the tattoo heals.
Some areas, like hands, fingers, head, and ears, naturally go through more wear and movement. Because of this, they tend to fade more and are not included for complimentary touch ups.
All touch ups are completed by the original artist so the work stays consistent.
Final Notes
Tattooing is a process that starts well before the appointment itself. Taking the time to understand how booking, pricing, and artist selection work will set you up for a better overall experience.
Clear communication, realistic expectations, and choosing the right artist for your project all play a role in the final result.
If you’re unsure where to start, you don’t need to have everything figured out. Providing a clear direction and being open to guidance allows us to place your project where it will work best.
